Bled out probably before he got to the hospital. Looks like the suspect just walked up within 10 meters of him and shot him with a pipe gun held together with duct tape.

This is two days before an election on Sunday. It's a pretty significant development in Japanese history. Abe was one of the longest prime ministers in office in Japan and is best known for his Abenomics economic policy and his Abenomask COVID relief plan both of which are considered to be of dubious success. He resigned in 2020 before the Olympics due to stomach problems.
