Everyone with a back yard should get their own chickens not least because the eggs will be way more fresh. Store eggs are weeks old before they even get to the store. Here is how you can tell. Break an egg into a clean glass and smell it. If it is fresh (less than 2 weeks old) it should have zero detectable smell. If you can detect a faint chemical smell it is already several weeks old.

The smell test is an interesting tip. There are benefits for having our own chickens.

When I had my hens, I noticed the egg yolks were a rich, orange color instead of the store-bought yellow yolks. I believe the nutritional value of the eggs from healthy free-range chickens is better.

It is getting to be more of a challenge to find living chickens for purchase. Yesterday I went to a local store that sold chicks in past years, but this year they (Sutherlands) are not selling them.
