There were many reasons, including the fact that I can now teach many more people and with less interference online.

No kidding. He can reach a million times more people with less SJW horseshit through his books, podcast and speaking events then he ever could have in a small Canadian classroom. Probably gets paid a lot more too.

But the problem with this is then everything becomes a paywalled silo..

The universities were supposed to be places where people could go to learn. As our regularity state grew, they went from places where people go to learn and think freely, to the gatekeepers of jobs and career paths, a piece of paper that says you're govt approved to start that position. It's not just in the woke sphere of journalism or cultural studies either, it's now permeated through to the hard sciences. That you have medical doctors or civil engineers graduate and know only how to query govt building codes or in the case of the last 2+years, ask the CDC on guidance to treat a viral, respiratory infection.

It would be far better that an alternative ecosystem be formed. Both academically, medically etc. It's unfortunate that even the medical institutions with religious foundations have caved to getting their federal monies.. but their administrators have long abandoned their founding principles.. so unfortunate.
