Not only am I not sure what the facts are either way, I wonder how many other stories are designed to get us angry and doubting things we have always like and believed in.

You should probably read the Let's Talk About Racism booklet they put out. Aside from some references to church, it reads like a typical HR struggle session guide. Micro aggressions, whiteness, white privilege, systemic racism - it's all there.
