I actually don't think it was on purpose.

It's just journalists are so used to rewriting press releases, google search results and their friend's opinions now they literally only know the same things as any one who reads their paper knows. They simply don't check original sources, or reality, so a lie just keeps getting repeated over and over. Copy and paste.

No way a single story from websites like the Independent aren't checked before they are uploaded for the world to read.

The thing is the headlines and sub headings aren't written by journalists.

They are written by the a sub editor who could well be the boss's kid on work experience.

It then got changed very quickly.
