Seems to be a lefty trend. Reddit did this years ago. Even Saidit does it, which is the one thing about this site I don't like.

Not sure why. I feel like it's meant to form a hivemind.

If you don't see any dislikes, it subtly encourages you to like it, or leave the channel.

Saidit has replaced the dislike button with the ability to call someone a NiggerFaggotRetard and that is definitely a positive change. It makes Saiditors have to engage in actual debate with others, even if it is nothing but expressing disbelief at how big a FaggotyNiggerRetard they are.

But there is a downside. It seems the ability to call a NiggerFaggotRetard by name can attract an unfortunate number of retarded teenagers, who do just that. Then your userbase begins to shed the intelligent, and you end up with mostly annoying kids. New voat seems like an example of that, despite some of the old goats still being there.

However, their 'hot' front page is getting more comments than we are on saidit, so the dynamic is more complex than just downvotes and retard-naming.

True. But if the vast majority of your userbase (cough voat cough) is calling everyone a NiggerFaggotRetard then the problem might not be the platform. It will be the users. SaidIt thankfully restricts and punishes personal attacks in Pyramid of Debate.
If SaidIt had dislikes then users like socks would be downvoted into oblivion. At the moment, everyone who hasnt outright blocked him just call him a filthy shill and point out how wrong he is. This is much more productive than memory holing his opinions.

the problem might not be the platform. It will be the users.

Disagree. "Platforms" provide a place to present your beliefs. With no other criteria, shills and trolls are free to present their lies and disinformation as facts.

Well that does explain Twitter then

We can identify danger, when a community comes together and expresses unacceptace of a thing, in a world that is increasing digital, losing this virtual tool to signal community disapproval (downvotes) is a soft form of fascism.
