It does make me a bit sad, there was a lot I liked about ruqqus. It was over the minute they "pivoted", though.

A terrible pity because it had potential, Saidit has moral and principle and they have none. They at ruqqus didn't have the same Q-Anon crazy Libertarian base and Nationalism and Alt-Right posts as voat. I guess it was 'something' one time, ruqqus could have been soemthing and it was more about the memes.... but then came the censorship and bannings. https://saidit.net/s/SaiditAlternatives/comments/2l0e/make_a_ruqqus/ 'Ruqqus is ass, they ban everyone'

The downfall of Ruqqus is well documented on saidit

Then conversations were leaked across socialmedia of Ruqqus admin hanging with transexual weirdos on discord and talking shit about their own site, hating on their own user base. Then voat went down at Christmas and the voat culture arrived...kind of.... Ruqqus refuses to change its culture with new users, nazi commie rules are enforced to fight new users and it implodes due to Voat's exodus? https://saidit.net/s/whatever/comments/72ex/ruqqus_implodes_due_to_voats_exodus/ they did however at first mostly ban a group 'SoapBoxBanHammer' which I seen way back in the day at voat, I never understood their 'soapbox' agenda, they did have bots and they would troll, shitpost but they were also a mob or mafia and ran one of the most powerful upvoting downvoter mafias on voat and could destroy a person's karma or vote ability or post ability or they could promote their own shitty posts across the front page....I don't think many really cared that soapbox was banned the user base at voat itself mostly hated 'soapbox', I'm not sure where soapbox is now maybe at phuks?

More bug and server and technical issues Ruqqus down - "We are having account issues with our host. Ruqqus is down while we resolve these issues and/or move hosts." https://saidit.net/s/SocialMedia/comments/6c0n/ruqqus_down_we_are_having_account_issues_with_our/

QUOTE ' Nationality the Dual Citizen? "American" https://encyclopediadramatica.online/Ruqqus The internet is a terrifying place for your average normie, filled with differing opinions and neverending lulz guaranteed to redpill anyone easily susceptible to words online. Over the years, many websites have come and gone to cater to those wanting to talk about whores and niggers tonguing their anuses. But Reddit rose above the ranks, ushering in a new era of internet speech, until they didn't. In comes Ruqqus to save the day! Adam LaDine✡ had a dream in 2017, to create what Imzy once was in his own kiked vision. But he couldn't just create a Reddit clone and advertise it as Reddit with pro-Jew tendencies, he needed to figure out a way to sucker in a userbase dissatisfied with the state of Reddit at the time. Lo and behold, Adam had cracked the code! Just say it's a "freeze peach" website and you'll have your audience in no time at all!'

Ruqqus is going to embrace deletions, bannings and censorship? https://saidit.net/s/ruqqus/comments/5iao/ruqqus_is_going_to_embrace_deletions_bannings_and/

1 Month ago they start censoring Corona propaganda or Covid questions on behalf of reddit https://saidit.net/s/ruqqus/comments/8clh/massive_reddit_movement_to_ban_all_dissenting/ deleting user names, banning people and erasing their entire posts

i had thought encyclopedia dramatica was gone for good. I wish websites didn't have to always change their address like that, and you can't google it of course as that is censored. I could have searched more I guess but yeah

Those zoomers were in over their heads since day 1. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

What did you saw wrong with the site overall? Does this mean Saidit is again the biggest reddit (clone) alternative?

[–][deleted] 15 insightful - 2 fun15 insightful - 1 fun16 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

They made bad business/political decisions and bad tech decisions. The crux of the issue was advertising themselves as a free speech site but then ungracefully walking it back later. Voat.co closing was the nail in the coffin, if voat would have stayed open, maybe ruqqus would still be around.

Nah, saidit is pretty small compared to the communities.win sites. They are the biggest reddit alternative by far.

[–]awdrifter 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Communities.win is basically became the alternative after Ruqqus pivoted to censorship. I'm still on Poal and obviously here sometimes. But I think Communities.win will grow after every major Reddit ban.

Too much liberalism can be just as toxic as too much authoritarianism. IMO, Saidit does has the flaw of being too liberal and It's hardly the ideal place for quality information warfare because everything gets reduced to a popularity contest. It's very prone to be subverted.

I think people should create their own subs and don't shy away from increasing the authoritarianism while under Saidit rules even if they get rather isolated because of it while trying to allow as much opposition as possible. This opens up for the chance of different ideological guilds to show up and helps add a lot of variety to the site and fun competition.

        [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

One of the issues is that "free speech" sites are easy to manipulate by a broad range of people, from Mosssad shills to neonazis, to the mentally challenged, to 12-year-old 4channers. Free speech is of course always limited in some manner on these alt sites, and as you indicate, Ruqqus couldn't manage it.

I never returned to the site after months of errors and problems even loading the website. I forgot it was around and wasn't keeping up.

This is an explanation from a (downvoted -27) admin on that thread:

In short, we fell victim to our own naive idealism. We allowed nazis and incels to destroy the site, because we believed that stopping them would be compromising our promise of free speech. In hindsight, we should have cut them out sooner.

This is a comment from a Guildsmith? on that thread, in response to the admin:

What he just said is false. What happened to Ruqqus is utterly incompetent, ungrateful, and condescending leadership. Literally, all these guys can do is code - no other function.

captainmeta4 cannot talk to Ruqqus userbase about anything other than an update without insulting them. He has none of the skills of a leader, ceo, or frontman. He's the kind of guy that needs to be hidden away, locked in an office, and prevented from ever interacting with the public because he simply cannot. Yet, he was leading the show - he was telling users "your opinions don't matter," he was appointing himself guildmaster and changing guild settings, he was banning people from official Ruqqus guilds because he didn't like their on-topic posts.

kek is a follower poorly imitating what he's read in tech magazines and journals. He is young and unable to acknowledge captainmeta4's poor leadership or synthesize what it means.

Arkitect has been MIA almost the entire time, but I suspect he just goes along with whatever it is captainmeta4 is doing.

All of them completely and utterly refuse to acknowledge the role they played and the ultimate responsibility they bare for the events that led to the failure of Ruqqus as a social media platform. They did this every step of the way and they still do it. They will make excuses that look like they were ripped from poorly written press statements, they will blame their early adopting userbase, they will lie. But, Ruqqus failed this early on - despite initial excitement - for no reason other than how they behaved and the choices they made.

        That, in a nutshell is what killed Ruqqus, but more specifically, there's this;

        1. The admins were only interested in suggestions and feedback from a relatively small group of Ruqqus Discord users. These users differ/differed significantly from the average Ruqqus user and actively despised them. They would antagonize Ruqqus users via brigading, guild seiging, general harassment, and "feature" and policy suggestions that you'd think would be very questionable on their face - but, apparently not to Ruqqus admins. As you'd hopefully not expect, Ruqqus admins enabled this behavior by refusing to address brigading entirely, preemptively telling Ruqqus Discord about the bans of guildmasters (which enabled Ruqqus Discord members to seige and subvert entire communities before actual members of the guild could do anything about it), allowing and partaking in the harassment and name-calling of users they didn't like, and implementing "features" and policies that were counter to their initial "free speech" and "if it's legal, it's allowed" premises. Yet, when users reacted, the admins shit on them harder and told them it was their fault.

        2. The admins outright refused to accept their niche, they thought they could compete with Reddit on apolitical content, and they refused to market Ruqqus at all (primarily because carpathianflorist said marketing Ruqqus and/or trying to get more people to hear about it was stupid). But, it makes sense, right? You yourselves are allegedly right-wingers and you have a right-wing niche, so it might be productive to at least try to make Ruqqus known to other right-wingers (the people it already appeals to and who are actively looking for a place to go because of ban waves) via sharing about it on right-wing forums, the comment sections of right-wing youtubers and podcasters, you might even try to get some personalities to mention your new social media platform, right? But, no. The admins were oddly obsessed with keeping right-wingers off the site, "containing" their current userbase, and "getting more left-wing and apolitical content" (which would've come naturally with more users in general) - they were obsessed with making another Reddit "but without censorship." And for whatever reason, they thought carpathianflorist - openly authoritarian left-winger and "drama connoisseur" was the guy to listen to.

Now, Ruqqus was created as a reaction to the massing banning of right-wing and anti-woke communities on Reddit and so, that's who predominantly came to Ruqqus. Yet, the majority of the Ruqqus Discord users who had any meaningful say or rapport with the admins were left-wing (especially the leader, carpathianflorist) or "i-wanna-be-nice" type republicans; literally liquid food for thought.

They don't want to talk about it and keep making up excuses because they look stupid for the whole thing.

The admins were only interested in suggestions and feedback from a relatively small group of Ruqqus Discord users.

They used Discord instead of their own fucking platform? Tells me all I need to know about them.

it's weird to have a discord for a reddit type site, like why not just stay on the discord and chat there

like do they organize times to go onto ruqqus and chat? LOL just kinda lame. I go to discord for a few things but like if there was a discord for saidit, maybe there is I don't know, there probably is, but what would be the point.

            Not surprising.

The admins gave up on their principles, enacted bad faith rules, banned +MTGOW and +Incels for seemingly no reason other than their own opinions, and burned through a ton of goodwill with their "pivot" post which wasn't even written by them. For months they barely interacted with the community at all, choosing to hide in discord instead. Plenty of users pointed out problems and offered potential solutions, and they reacted in the most childish ways possible, with gifs or memes or not at all, instead of actually addressing concerns.

The mod log in +Ruqqus already shows them deleting comments and posts going a month back: https://ruqqus.com/+Ruqqus/mod/log

The legacy of Ruqqus, as well as the reputation of the admins kek and captainmeta4, will be forever tarnished by their recent fuck ups and abject cowardice. There was a graceful way to shut down Ruqqus if that's what they wanted to do. This wasn't it.

The takeaway is that any centralized solution to speech online is at risk, and only as good as those in charge. Ruqqus as a platform was designed to avoid cabal like behavior, but it's meaningless if you can still organize off the platform (discord) and if your admins (captainmeta4) are unprincipled.

edit: also for anyone wondering, some Ruqqies moved to discussions.app. It's a small community and it needs work, but I have yet to see a single post or comment be removed if you're looking for a free speech haven.
