Well the great news is where not full time residents, the wifes contract ends soon and we will head back home. The state has become Mexafornia catering to illegals and handing them much needed documents so they can vote.

I enjoyed my time in the far upper left corner (Aschaffenburg - Fiori Kaserne), even under the heavy thumb of the US military. But it freezes there. Actually spent the coldest night of my life about a half mile from the east German border.

Sure, parts of California are awful for a variety of reasons. But live in one of the primo areas and there's no place to go that isn't a downgrade. Depends on your criteria, of course.
