Hard to Make Heads or Tails of this Strangeness.

A Colorado man frustrated over the fact that none of his friends believed he could be behind the recent mass shooting in Boulder was arrested by federal authorities after he traveled to an Iowa gun store and demand the clerk sell him a semiautomatic rifle, authorities said.

Adam Vannoy, a self-described firearms enthusiast, was agitated and armed when he showed up on Tuesday to purchase an AR-style rifle from Sportsman’s Warehouse in Ankeny, Iowa, near Des Moines, according to a federal complaint unsealed Friday. Workers at the shop said they refused to sell him the weapon after he complained to them about how no one accused him of carrying out a shooting at the King Soopers grocery store in Boulder.

Ten people were killed in the Monday attack and a suspect, identified as Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, was arrested amid the violent chaos.

In addition to denying the sale, the store employees notified the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives about Vannoy’s comments. Agents arrested the 40-year-old gun lover in Iowa and he appeared in court for the first time on Friday.

Just weeks earlier, Vannoy was arrested by the Nebraska State Patrol on Interstate 80 in Lancaster County. Another driver had called police to report he was driving recklessly at about 120 mph.

A quick search of his vehicle turned up a handgun from Vannoy’s jacket, a loaded AR-style semiautomatic rifle with an illegal silencer, four other firearms, ammunition, a bulletproof blanket and vest, two brown wigs and an Air Force costume. Officers also found marijuana.

He told officers at the time that his car was packed up with all of his belongings because he planned on leaving Denver. He told the trooper his neighbors didn’t like him, he had a mental breakdown and quit his job. He added that he would use his time behind bars to “think about getting even with people,” a remark the trooper viewed as threatening.

Vannoy was jailed on weapons and drug charges, but he was released after posting $5,000 bond on March 17, despite the fact he threatened to kill a guard, exposed his penis to guards and threw feces from his cell into a common area.

Videos posted by Vannoy on Instagram include a receipt showing he purchased nearly $3,000 in merchandise at Brownells, a large firearms and accessories retailer in Grinnell, Iowa, after his release from Nebraska custody. He said in the videos that the best way to show the Nebraska State Patrol that he wasn’t plotting anything nefarious was to rearm himself.
