Assange deserves a legit Freedom Medal. As a consolation prize; he'd probably also accept asylum in Russia.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is a dubious award. Dubya awarded Cosby the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2002. Fortunately, the medal is not a get out of jail free card.
