Much of Southern Florida was built over swampland and many coastal areas were formed by pumping sand from the ocean.
... why...? Why did they build this then? If it’s not legit, why have it?

I am not a Floridian but have lived there for about two years total though not now. I have always heard and read that it was a huge swamp and know for a fact that a lot of it still is. You still read — on slow news days — about alligators walking around in residential areas. Maybe we can get a native of the state to weigh in here. The U of Florida, Gainesville stadium is nicknamed: the Swamp.
