I think the hoarding helped push gun sales up. Plus, most people had extra money from the "Covid-19 relief" act to pay for them, and a lot of people used that money for guns and ammunition instead of saving it for essentials. I think you're correct that the riots and looting were the main catalysts for the run on firearms, though.
