This just seems to me like the marijuana industry is lobbying for regulations that hurt the tobacco industry. It's literally a turf war between two drug cartels — and yes, tobacco is a drug — and the government is working with one of the cartels.

Our grow op.... err sorry, "cannabis production facility " was sold to a tobacco company... Big tobacco knows it's time to jump ship!

I dont think this law is trying to pit them against each other. It's just dumb people in a position of power making dumb decisions.

That too. Sometimes I overestimate the intelligence of elected officials... I should've lowered my bar, considering how it's California.

I'm opposed to the legalization of drugs. You shouldn't do them inside or outside — and again, this includes tobacco.

Ok, but counter point, drugs are really fun.

You.. You do have a pretty good point there.

Not only are drugs fun, but they actually work.

Hell yeah, I think I was halfway into a jug of homemade wine and smoking a doobie when I wrote that.

If you can be perfectly content sober, that's awesome. I wish I were. A lot of us just aren't.

On caffeine: I believe it's a pseudo-drug, but it shouldn't be banned, just regulated. The same goes for sugar and the like. It won't make you a criminal, or turn your lungs into balls of sludge, but it's not something to consume in large quantities.

It's in so many things, and won't be going away any time soon. Caffeine is in coffee, soda, tea, and hot chocolate, apparently — all things people consume on a daily basis.

I actually drink way too much Dr. Pepper — though I've abstained from daily doses of coffee, I only drink it around once a month, and only if it's diluted. I have GERD, and according to a doctor I haven't seen in years, I'm not supposed to consume any caffeine — but she also told me not to eat any meat, and I ain't living like no vegan just 'cause my stomach hurts.

But according the the link above, some tea has more caffeine than Dr. Pepper, so sugar is probably what I should be concerned about.

Yeah, I think that if you seek out stimulants specifically to alter your mental state, then that's a bad thing, but if I just want to drink some Dr. Pepper, because I like the taste, then it's not. I would love it if they made decaff Dr. Pepper, though, and the same goes for tea.

There's a big difference between intentionally consuming a drug and knowingly consuming a drug. In the former case, the prime motive is to receive the effects of that drug, and in the latter case, the prime motive is something else.

I'm against the use of hard drugs (including tobacco), but it shouldn't be a crime. No one can tell me what I can or can't put into my own body.

            [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I agree, I believe all drugs should be decriminalized — but that's very different than legalization. If you sell drugs, though, you should go to prison.

Drug use breeds crime, laziness, and degeneracy — which are all collective burdens which harm the rest of society as well. You can't make the "don't tell me what to do" argument so long as your actions affect others.

I'd believe you were serious if you included sugar in that simplistic, ill-informed blanket statement.

No, we aren't going to ban sugar, Mr. Bloomberg.

Tobacco should be banned and cannabis should be mandatory. Bill Hicks was right:

My apartment recently went no smoking inside. It does make sense. You get tar build up on everything and it's horrible for your lungs and your pets.

Pot smoke ain't better, but presumably most people don't smoke bud like they'd smoke ciggs. I ain't one of those people.

And as nasty as hotboxing your own place with weed, it's kinda shitty for neighbors trying to raise their kids and whatnot have to see you Snoop Doggin it on the patio.

So it seems reasonable to me, except is there a place for people to smoke ciggs in San Fran anymore. Ironically now you can no longer blow a fag in your San Franciscan apartment.

If it’s a health concern then gay sex between men should probably be outlawed due to the alarmingly rates of HIV. Alternatively you can simply ban smoking and gay sex in your own apartment and not worry about what others do.

              [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

It's not just a long term healrh concern, it's hard to breathe in a smokey apartment. I usually run 3 HEPA filter fans at once just so I'm not coughing up a lung.

And sadly it's not just a personal issue, I can smell when my neighbors are getting high. They can probably smell my smoke as well.

              [–]Trajan 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It sounds like there may be a need to tighten-up building regulations if a person smoking in their apartment causes problems in neighbouring apartments. If a person's apartment is smokey because of their own smoking habits, and not affecting their neighbours, then that seems to be something between them and their landlord - not a situation where the government should step-in.

the weed smoke is good for you so it's good if it gets spread to the neighbors, that's probably why they're making it allowed to smoke weed in them, now the annoying neighbors can't complain.

By that logic heterosexuality should be banned because the current population level is unsustainable.

While I enjoy the optimism, excessive breeding isn’t likely to an issue in that city.

You might then want to start with countries with higher rates of reproduction. You could tour Africa and Asia, encouraging the locals to try homosexuality.

It's been that way for 20 years, no smoking apartments. Literally a fake article nothingburger for 16year olds. You just go on the balcony to smoke. OMG SO CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
