This just applies to new cars, so I guess that's not so bad. The used car market is about to get a bump. I get the feeling California will be importing more used cars.

Although with Tesla announcing 50% reduction in battery costs it could be time for the switch. That should put the base Tesla just within the reach of the low end new market at about $25k.

Global warming is a hoax.

California is devolving.

I agree on both counts, but not necessarily on this topic so much; simply because Teslas are pretty nice. It reduces pollution, we just need to find a better way to recycle batteries. It forces a new avenue for innovation, the combustion engine is pretty much as good as it will get.

The government shouldn't be banning anything people want to buy, but it is California and the retarded shit they do makes this look pretty ok. They literally made it illegal for you to remove squater's tents from your own property. I really just want to pat them on the back and say "that's nice". Like when an autistic kid proudly shows you the giant burger he pulled out of his nose.

I mean, this whole reply is so on point, but I've been lmao and agreeing with this all at the same time. You're fucking hilarious.

"It reduces pollution"

You are an idiot.

Um, if you don't believe smog exists I don't even know what to say to you.

Gas cars are bad in many ways, not just greenhouse gases.

The impact of Green house gases is a myth.

The exhaust is bad for your health and can form into smog in the right conditions.

This is true, but they're not interested in the health and safety aspect.

They're focused on the global warming hoax. Is a hoax in the most literal sense. They had me fooled for years.

Anyway, the long term disposal problem of using batteries is not being discussed either. The heavy metal contamination is functionally eternal.

It can't be cleaned. It has to be removed from contaminated areas, and stored somewhere else forever.

Oil contamination is bad, but at some point the hydrocarbons deteriorate and disappeared.

Heavy metals are elemental, and eternal.

Just wondering (and anyone can answer): how long do the batteries last and how much does it cost to replace them? How many full charges do they take and how much total average mileage are we talking? Can the replaced batteries be recycled or do they end up in a landfill?

I like the fact that electric cars are simpler to manufacture seeing how they have significantly fewer parts. Also liked the idea of hybrids but always knew the push to full electric was inevitable when battery tech was at a point where it would be feasible. Seems like the EV1 from Who Killed the Electric Car was loved by those who (briefly) got the opportunity drive it...

I ban California. Same chance of it happening.

Don't they need police to enforce something like that?

    [–]Canbot[S] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Lol. They are only defunding the street cops. They will double down on the regulation enforcement department.

They'll have robo cops by 2035.

Nah. It's easy to implement rules against tax payers and people with money. If you have money (as in, enough money to buy a brand new car) you can still easily get fucked by the government.

The whole "you can't get blood from a stone" is why crime is tolerated.

    Seems like a good idea.

Will never happen. Count on it.

Did they have to ban sales of PS3s or CRT monitors to get people to use flat screen LED TVs? The fact the government HAS to do this there illustrates no one wants this crap.

Heck, I remember when the government tried to mandate HDTV by 2006 or something in the nineties. It actually was harder than thought to make that happen but because flat screens were so much cheaper, most people moved on anyways. Used and refurbished TVs on Craigslist just made it easier.

With EVs, why do they not trust the market to sort itself out here? If I could go to a dealership and buy an EV Tahoe that did everything a gas one did and charged in 2-3 minutes, I would be sold. The problem is, it can't, and it may never match up to a gas car. Why? They tried these things before and the EVs in the early 20th century STILL have the same problems the ones today have. These cars have a lot of issues. The people who generally are EV fanboys are idiots who get destroyed in a logical argument.

Also, like someone else said, 2035 is a BS date. The people passing it know they won't be around by then and if they are, they can quietly make it go away.

I read Popular Science too much, this tech is a joke.

Many governments across the globe have tried to ban the sale of older-style incandescent bulbs. It usually receives pushback since there are still applications of incandescent that outshine other options.

People are already fleeing cali. If the work at home continues for a lot of the tech workers, cali is going to leak like a sieve. cali evacuees have already driven up the prices in Idaho.

If the work at home continues for a lot of the tech workers, cali is going to leak like a sieve.

If that continues too long all those jobs will move offshore.

    [–]denverkris 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

That's not always as easy to do as you might think.

    [–]insta 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It wasn't easy to transition to remote work for many jobs but a lot of them did it over the pandemic.

All I'm saying is that those people who are working from home and super happy about it better keep a pulse on their job because if you never need to go to the office or meet a client face-to-face or go to a worksite you should really have something planned in case you get canned.

And thus California returned to the desert.
