No it was shot down above a war-zone in Ukraine.
There were 2 possible candidates:
1. The russian-backed side of Ukraine (there are a lot of Russians there) had BUK-rockets that could shoot down an airliner.
2. There were Ukraine fighters, that could shoot and use missiles.

Note: The plane was instructed to fly above a war-zone for some weird reason.

In both scenarios, it seems that neither party had intended to shoot down the airplane.
1. The rocket might have shot by accident, trying to shoot down an Ukraine fighter.
2. The Ukraine fighters tried to shoot down the plane with Putin on it.

Both sides have put up some evidence to support their case, but again: there is no evidence that shows that the plane was targeted on purpose.
The trial only allowed the US/Ukraine part of the story, so that is the only thing that you hear in the official news.

The US and NATO used it to push more sanctions against Russia.
The US really wants to isolate Russia and take over the Oil in that region.

I hope we will soon move to Thorium and fusion reactors, so we can finally stop the wars for oil.
