Black mayor, black prosecutor and black murderers — what a shithole. No wonder Jussie Smollett picked Chicago.

Gibberish. I mean seriously, do you even know how numbers work?

Murders in Chicago so far this year: 116. Today is the 103rd day of the year. This gives us 1.126 killings per day this year.

2019 518 killing/365 = 1.419

2018 561/365 = 1.53

2017 653/365 = 1.78

2016 771/365 = 2.112

2015 468/365 = 1.28

You need to provide your source(s) or your numbers are also gibberish.

Those numbers of from Wikipedia, click on the button to open the "homicide statistics"chart. But of course I need not tell you of the Hey Jackass site for all things having to do with Chicago shootings and killings. If you do not have it bookmarked you ought to.

Great links! Thanks for bringing your A game.

Granted Wikipedia is exceptionally compromised, but because it gets all the eyes I try to add to it what I can when I can, despite the ongoing battle over authenticity.

Love the HeyJackass graphics.

I slept on it. While my numbers are right, I question the analysis. Possibly we are counting the number of killings in some busy times of year in 2015, but not counting it in 2020 as it hasn't happened yet. The real way to do this would be to compare the year-to-date for each year. Still, I we have to do our best with the best data at hand.

I think we can say there has been no big change in Chicago killings. There might be a small one.

Also, on this subject, what is with people and Chicago? It has never been #1 in US murder rates. Last time I looked it was not even in the top ten. Saint Louis, Detroit, Baltimore, and New Orleans are all more dangerous. They are just smaller and so have a lower body count.

Miami used to be bad too in the 80s.

Variables to consider:

  • Winter keeps people inside when cold, perhaps that's a factor.
  • Colder climates tend to have more social safety net programs. Even the poor are treated better, in winter. Northern countries of Europe, Canada, etc don't let their poor freeze nearly as much.
  • Suburban sprawl. Chicago is a newer city, slightly, and not so limited geographically as say, Manhattan Island. Less compact means less stressors.
  • Neighbourhoods. Perhaps the violence is essentially limited to a very specific danger zone, rather than all over generally dangerous.
  • Culture. Different cities, different vibes.

Beyond that I have no idea.

Trust me on this. (I see three were killed in Chicago last weekend, compared to the same weekend last year.)

I have! I think you shared it with me. Fascinating stuff. Great design too.

I'm trying to catch up to my backed up messages today. :P

Chicago has a lower percentage of blacks than the other cities mentioned.

Detroit – 79%
Baltimore – 62%
New Orleans – 60%
St Louis – 44%
Chicago – 30%

Blacks commit the majority of homicides in the US.

According to the US Department of Justice, African Americans accounted for 52.5% of all homicide offenders from 1980 to 2008, with Whites 45.3% and "Other" 2.2%. The offending rate for African Americans was almost 8 times higher than Whites.

That is part of this conversation why? But if you are interested in trivia, I would point you to my list on the subject:

Seriously, isn't that a great site?

It really is.

I haven't (and won't) check the figures, but it seems non-corporate in speaking inconvenient truths very clearly and concisely.

A+++

IMO, you should post it as is and/or whenever topical.
