Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor, came under criticism on Friday after she told a conservative radio host that the Confederate flag symbolized “service, sacrifice and heritage” for some people in her state until Dylann S. Roof “hijacked” it.

Mr. Roof, the avowed white supremacist who killed nine black parishioners when he opened fire on the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in June 2015, posed with the flag in several photos before the long-planned attack.

Ms. Haley, a Republican and former United States ambassador to the United Nations, made her comments on Friday on the podcast The Glenn Beck Program, hosted by Glenn Beck.

Up until now, she has made few missteps. I consider her to be the emergency GOP candidate for president if President Trump drops out.

As a Yankee who lived in South Carolina for over a decade, I agree with her. Most Southerners really do have "sacrifice and heritage" in mind when they honor the flag of the South.

A February report... identified the [Charleston] shooting as a central moment in the Confederate flag debate.

Fittingly, a shooting in Charleston was a central moment in the Confederate secession debate 150 years before.

I have always viewed it as an American version of the swastika. Lots of people see that flag and understand to be a flag of racists. Seems White supremacists see it the same way. Anyone who displays that thing looks to be supporter of Dylan Roof and his ilk. Maybe you think it is wrong that we have that impression, but that is the impression we have.
