What do you expect when people think they are entitled to the fruits of your labor for free while charging a premium to even learn how to perform well enough to even try to earn a living performing?

It's because the market is oversaturated.

Wow just like literally every non-pornographic entertainment “career”, where the vast majority of people go completely unnoticed and never make it big.

Since when is middle class "making it big"?

It's not about making it big. It's about making a living, which musicians used to be able to do.

Increased availability of entertainment, often for free, as well as the ease at which entertainment can be created, have effectively raised the profitability noise floor to a level where making it big is the only way for it to be your primary source of income. This is a bit of a false dilemma though because people can far more easily produce entertainment as a decent secondary source of income while working a full time job.

Ah, so it's "fuck the little guy". Again.

Well no it's more like an ever increasing number of little guys fighting each other for a piece of a finite slice and every once in a while a few ascend to big guys and begin fighting for a different unrelated finite slice, but that slice has a much lower fixed limit on the number of competitors that can fight at once.

Good thing making music is fun, and worth doing just for the music.

Being able to make money from recordings is, what, maybe 100 years old?

They had a good run.

Maybe if you can entertain people in person they will pay to see you perform and you can make money the old fashioned way, going out and doing a day's work.

Musicians in general have a hard time finding places to play for free, even less actually pay them. SoundCloud illustrates the issue nicely. There's tons of music, but most of it isn't stuff you really want to listen to, let alone pay for.

Fuck the little guy! All power to those who are already making a good income!

Lets give every average musician $100,000 then. How is that going to work?

Why does the little people trying to make a living make you so angry?

You need to consider who you're talking to here. You can't just look on your sheet and find the first insult that's approved by the CCP.

That's not an insult, you just used an insult. That's an observation of behavior observed over a period of time. Always against the little guy.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

My observation over the long period is you're a CCP shill.

[–]Chipit[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

You didn't actually counter the observation or offer any counter-argument.

Shit, better take some points off my debate score.

It's just one of those things Chippy, ever since the advent of recordings the value of regular musicians has plummeted. Especially now with streaming, where you listen not only to only the best music ever produced by the most talented artists, you don't even have to own it.

Can debate why that's unfair or why that shouldn't be, but it's pointless. Tell me how we're supposed to change it. Mandate every McDonald's must have a live show every night?
