After watching the documentary on The Residents, I always think of them when I hear The Flaming Lips. I wonder if The Residents were influential in any way for them, more in presence than sound.

Link to the doc?

There's a whole lot of 80s+- performance art groups that influenced each other, directly or indirectly. It'd be hard to imagine they weren't aware of them at least.

I saw Ween and The Flaming Lips at the Berkeley Bowl ~16 years ago. Ween was disappointingly okay doing their great stuff mediocrely. The mediocre Lips songs* were performed spectacularly and with great fanfare, making it worth the concert.

* There are a few songs of theirs that I really like. Besides Face I get their stuff mixed up with a couple other groups.
