Cigarettes have just as many chemicals. Only option is buy pure tabaco and roll your own.

I have an electric shredder for whole leaf tobacco, although the "pipe tobacco" they sell for rolling doesn't seem like it has much added, probably just a little casing.

Well, actually there are three main chemical compounds in vape liquid; propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and nicotine. One chemical byproduct from vaporization I can think of is acrolein. However, the quantity produced is too low to cause any adverse effects according to the study I linked. That being said, inhaling anything other than clean air at frequent intervals for a prolonged period of time is bound to cause some cumulative damage. Nevermind the fact that as something new, no empirical evidence on the effects of vaping exists. The breakdown of tobacco during combustion however does produce thousands of well-known cancer-causing chemicals such as benzene, formaldehyde, nitrosamines, etc. Pick your poison.

There is definitely some harm from inhaling smoke from burning anything, but I wish there were more studies on how human lungs are more capable at dealing with smoke than any other species. It's not to diminish the harm but humans literally evolved around fires. Controlling fire was one of the first technologies ever, and I bet since then people have been smoking plants for all kinds of reasons. Only recently has chemistry allowed for unnatural substances to be made which even a pinch of it can kill you. My personal experience is that smoking plants isn't that addictive overall (you have to try to abuse it), and the main problem is second hand smoke.

The establishment: don’t smoke because it’s bad for you

Also the establishment: eat sugar, soy lecithin, high fructose corn syrup, and Crisco

I’m sure the Indians did something to it that the white man didn’t, and as a result had lower rates of cancer.
