They are doing the "what is Japanese anyway? Japan is a nation of immigrants" bit though.

I read a good article about how Japan uses the idea they are just weird to avoid pressure to change their culture.

The trouble with the West is they tried to push that their values and culture were universal, which then means everyone gets a say in the matter.
