I reckon this has been known since at least the Roman empire or possibly the Egyptians and secret societies have been directing the rise and fall of civilizations ever since

Meh, England, Wales and Scotland have existed in much the same form for over a thousand years. It's not that hard.

not really England had a civil war and was taken over by a Dutch coup in 1688 and all three were separate countries for a long time

Scotland was changed by the English and lasted as it was because every time a legitimate rebel-king arose to change things, he lost. A thousand years ago, Scotland was still known by many other names depending on who is talking about it. The Scotland and Wales you are talking about are actually just English-pasty states, so, unwilling members of the English Empire. Now, how did the English last as long as they did? You fucking tell me, because I just don't get it.

Societys are just as mortal as the people who create them. They undergo life cycles just like a living organism. They are born, they grow to maturity, then they decline and die. The lifespan of a society is measured in human generations. Some Empires are more unstable than others, though. Some of them are pre-destined to live fast and die young.
Of course, there are always Elites in the background who have a disproportionate influence in their Empires policys. The Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, etc all had their own Elites who dictated Imperial strategy. They were largely responsible for the victorys and defeats of their own Empire.
