I had an instructor, when I was taking Aviation Maintenance classes, who was a POW guard in Missouri during WWII. He told us that the Germans called the P-38 the "forked tail devil" and it was feared by them. If I remember right, the Hellcats were less maneuverable, but held up to more damage than the Zeros.
