My favorite herb to grow in the garden is lemongrass. The natural citronella in it keeps bugs away (mainly mosquitoes), is delicious wrapped around fish, and if you make a tea of it, you'll sweat citronella, which keeps the bugs off you without bugspray.

Comfrey is good to bring deep nutrients to the surface for other plants to utilize, and marigolds around the perimeter help keep pests in check.

Protip - piss on your compost pile. It adds nitrogen, and by the time you use it, the ammonia in the uric acid has broken down. Or use a pee-bale, a bale of hay that you pee on for several months, then let sit a month or two, then gets added to your compost. Sounds a bit wierd, but it makes a high nitrogen compost.
