Because of his incorruptible nature and simple mind that can't be read, he is sent into the den of evil itself to help save the remaining survivors of the plague from nuclear annihilation.

Wasn't he hypnotized to carry the message, and to recognize the moon as a trigger for action.

When Flagg tried to read his mind, all he could see was the moon.
