My wife was born in Africa and grew up with this dish, though she calls it funge (not sure of the spelling). I never developed the taste for it but our kids did and when they come to visit always ask her to make it, usually with curry chicken.

Fufu (or fufuo, foofoo, foufou) is a Twi word meaning "mash or mix" for a soft and doughy staple food of the Akan ethnic groups in Ghana, and made out of boiled cassava mixed with plantains or cocoyams and pounded together in a mortar (waduro) with a pestle (woma) unique to the Akans and only eaten with liquid soups (nkwan) such as, Light soup (Nkrakra nkwan), Abenkwan (palm nut soup), Nkatenkwan (peanut butter soup), Abunabun soup. Cassava seems like one of those things you eat because you have nothing better.

Cassava, like other foods, also has antinutritional and toxic factors. Of particular concern are the cyanogenic glucosides of cassava (linamarin and lotaustralin). On hydrolysis, these release hydrocyanic acid (HCN).[citation needed] The presence of cyanide in cassava is of concern for human and for animal consumption. The concentration of these antinutritional and unsafe glycosides varies considerably between varieties and also with climatic and cultural conditions. Selection of cassava species to be grown, therefore, is quite important. Once harvested, bitter cassava must be treated and prepared properly prior to human or animal consumption, while sweet cassava can be used after boiling. source
