This is deliberate. They don't want us driving cars anymore.

I think you could be right. It's looking like they will disable the combustion engine and require the switchover to electric vehicles. "Climate change" and fuel prices are driving forces for this change. When the world economy collapses, who will be able to afford to buy a new electric vehicle?
