I'm persistently amused by this apparent belief that the people calling for the overthrow would end up in a position where they would just cruise through the resulting chaos unaffected or unharmed.

I can't imagine that in a world ripping itself apart in chaos to form a new order people such as autistic rich women who look 12 would be experiencing the same level of care and tolerance they do right now.

I agree with you. In an overthrow of our current society the worst of human nature will reassert itself.

People in the west these days can barely live without power for 2 days... I cant imagine how they would survive without rule of law...

This3

A huge failing in the 'tear-it-down' bunch's thinking is what really goes on in failed states after it's been "torn down".

People on the ground quickly learn that empathy, altrusim and compassion are luxury goods, acquired during conditions of comfort and peace.

In places and times where the definition of "normal life" changes at every coup or 'color revolution', more direct and emphatic methods are used to maintain what passes for "order", especially among those who may have been directly preyed upon themselves. Those denizens rarely observe the niceties of 'civilized jurisprudence'.

Our whole love of victimhood and imagining the disabled as superheroes is all a mark of the decadence of our society.

These are luxuries but some people really buy them as reality. I even see some physically disabled people seriously saying their only problems are born from how other people react to their disability. No, the only reason you have such few problems is because the whole of society has chosen to support you as they are mostly good people with time and money to spare.

Rich people will be some of the first casualties of a SHTF scenario. Their staff will kill them and take their shit.

Greta is a shrewd businesswoman

People don't believe me when I tell them there is a huge communist effort that is camouflaged under all the different alarmist movements that are going on, and that it is a tactic they use to circumvent people's consent to a new form of government. The tactics seem to work because most people are too stupid to research information and think for themselves, while at the same time they are afraid to have differing opinions from the status quo. The general population is truly the biggest black pill. Maybe communism is the way given that so many people behave like human cattle.

Amen, brother.

I'd not say communism, but using the lingo to be in with the left crowd. Her rise to fame has been fascinating, and seeing alternative types simping for her has been a real red pill. Nevermind her parents being established media figures. She's as much part of the system as the rest.

Thirty bucks US to buy her book about getting rid of capitalism. Even the e-book is gonna cost you some dollars. She wants you to make sure her bank account is healthy before you firebomb your local bank.

I love that girl.

The world seems a less desolate place just knowing that that young woman, even since she was a girl, can see with clarity, and act with honesty.

Or be groomed by her father to spout his own politics and constantly live in fear of the world ending.

[–]ActuallyNot 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

Nah, it was Greta that moved her parents politics. And careers. Her mother stopped flying for work.

[–][deleted] 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

I hope you can at least see the irony of her shilling her own $30 book while calling for an end to capitalism

[–]ActuallyNot 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

I suspect that her problem with capitalism is that rich industries can buy the death of many people, and the destruction of many ecosystems to preserve their income, and it be worth it, financially for them, rather than a writer can make money off a book.

But I'll give it a read and let you know.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

Yes, I actually agree with her that our system of capitalism is structured in terms of incentives in way that is incompatible with sustainability. I just think it was ironically tone-deaf to talk about overthrowing capitalism while promoting a rather pricey for profit book.

She could have released it for free as a manifesto because saving the world by having people read it is more important than money. I imagine the book deal is quite substantial, maybe not Michelle Obama's $65 Million substantial, but she is worldwide recognizable celebrity with a substantial following of concerned Gen Zers.

I'm not even saying its a problem for her to profit from this book, books about saving the environment are good. But FFS, if you are going to do this, do not talk about overthrowing capitalism while you are out promoting a capitalist venture. This kind of shit just adds fuel to climate skepticism by making it look like shes in this for money or fame and impugns her credibility as a poster child for this important issue

[–]ActuallyNot 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

It's pretty hard to make much money from a book. You can do it if you're Stephen King or J K Rowling. Maybe Greta's got the international profile to make a living from it.

A relative of mine wrote an autobiography that was the best seller in the class in this country for a few weeks. He reckons he probably made about $5 per hour, less what he spent doing promotion.

He's anesthetist, so that's probably two orders of magnitude less that what he earned going to work.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Looked into it a little more

"Greta Thunberg says she earns no money from her activism"

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/greta-thunberg-activism-net-worth-earning-b2203372.html

I retract my criticism of Greta. This person needed to research their article better or more likely this is a rather effective smear attack

[–]ActuallyNot 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yeah. The young woman's genuine.

Interesting that as soon as the criticisms came up about her being a money making scheme, she made sure to donate all her winnings and activism based income to charity: I didn't know that, but it doesn't surprise me.

But you can't know anything about her and not know she's genuine. It's one of the superpowers of her type of autism: she's a straight talker.

[–]jet199 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Wow, what a martyr for the cause.

I'm sure that the terrible optics of her mother being so privileged and wasteful she was regally flying for work had nothing to do with the change.

[–]ActuallyNot 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

She was good at what she did. Renowned in Sweden.

And so the Marxist is now in broad daylight. All these so-called "progressive" movements, be they gender, sexual orientation, race, economic class, education status, environment, global warming and everything else, are all fronts for A COMMUNIST TAKEOVER OF THE WEST.

The last couple generations have been indoctrinated into thinking free-trade, ie Capitalist Systems, are inherently a bad thing. They naively think their corrupt politicians should hold their purse for them, to ensure their bills are paid. They are out of touch with reality, where free-trade is a huge step up from deadly cartels and gangs running trade through protection and extortion rackets.

Greta can suck start a fuck stick. This is the same girl that tried to tell us that eating ass helps to control human methane waste and going ass to mouth saves trees. She's a nut.

I don't know exactly what her book says, but how do you guys see capitalism as something which can just continue in its current form without end?

Oil is, by definition, a limited resource. BP projected 53 years to go at current rates, https://www.ibtimes.co.uk/world-energy-day-2014-how-much-oil-left-how-long-will-it-last-1471200 in 2014. That may seem like enough for you, but if you have kids or grandkids or know people thinking about having kids, 2067 is not an imaginary date anymore. Anyone born now will definitely be dealing with this.

And yes, you can say, "we can find more oil, we figured out fracking and deep sea drilling, we'll find some other method!" - but that isn't the point. That only extends the problem a few more years. It is going to run out. It's made of fossils, and until we have another few million years for fossils to turn into oil, we are using up the last of a limited thing. It might make a lot of money, because rich people will pay the most to have it, but it's not a fair way to divide a scarce and valuable resource.

I don't think anyone wants to "overthrow" or reject the rule of law. People want to reign in the greed & competitive materialism that is driving the overuse of our limited resources and find a better way to organize and distribute our shared potential.

Maybe it's impossible because humans are too corrupt, but all the same, capitalism is going to have to go through a major overhaul as the reality of oil scarcity becomes more obvious, and we can either try to plan for it, or deal with a lot of chaos, war & terror.

She wants to scrap the system that she is very much a part of? Weird flex, but ok.

Greta looks like she hasn’t been skipping seconds or dessert each night. Talk about ironic.
