Never implement electric vehicles until you set up an infrastructure for them that is not coal and oil burning for electricity.

I'm not one of those hyper-libertarian types who think that the free market is the answer to everything, but it is pretty frickin stupid to just completely ignore price signals here.

The price of an electric car tells me, "some of the crap used to make this must be really scarce / difficult to get, even moreso than the stuff used to make a gasoline-fueled car." And this is true in spite of subsidies and penalties designed to encourage the opposite.

How is it environmentalist to use up resources that are so scarce? If lithium is the culprit, are we not worried about mines? You don't have to blow mountains up with dynamite to get oil.

Um ok but theres no oil in it so obviously its green. Duh?

Nevermind who stands to profit from this sector getting enormous.

Just building the infrastructure to support EV's probably negates the CO2 saving benefits of using them. The impact of building it is massive. It's several times worse, due to the moronic ways it is being done, like giving federal tax money to states to incentivize building EV-only lanes on roads. Since only the rich can afford an EV, even after incentives, these privilege-corridors will get quite the welfare tax funding, authorized by rich Congress-members.

Shill article for 'free market' oil interests. I love this quote:

While they don’t guzzle gas, a single Tesla requires seven kilograms of lithium for its battery pack, which requires an energy-intensive extraction from the brine of salt flats that can damage the environment and cause water shortages

This is true of course, but there's no mention about the fact that the same things can be said about oil extraction.

The "This is true of course" part doesn't give you a hint?

What they've been doing for at least a decade now is make cars designed to be awful on purpose so people will be forced into the electric ones. They got rid of mini vans in the 2000s that had any meaningful gas milage and good design. The few that are out have the same stupid center console now and narrow windows like they want it so there's an excuse that 'Human drivers are baaaaaaaaaaaad!' then they can legitimately force the electric cars on us. They tried to force only the 'Obama' car to be the only car allowed on the road in 2010 and was narrowly blocked.

In our area there is a few of these 'Obama cars' you can see drive around and they look VERY uncomfortable. I actually saw one at Roth's last year and the owners let me look inside so yes they DO exist. Several cities had infrastructure up to measure how far you would drive with your existing gas cars and tax you if you drove more then 2 or was it 4 miles out? They never turned it on because it was blocked by Conservative judges. Portland Oregon has the infrastructure all ready in place but can't turn it on till given the A-okay.
