Corn is open pollinated, meaning its pollen floats in the air, sometimes a long distance. Thus GMO pollen contaminates crops that they prefer not to be GMO.

Yep, it's right there in the article, they want to preserve their local breeds. I don't think there's any problem with GMO but heritage breeds do need to be kept going. I mean that's likely where the GMO of the future will come from.
