PETA is rarely involved with pets. Their main goal is to try to assure that food animals and animals involved in capitalist enterprises are treated as humanely as possible. This has two results 1) They have reduced the suffering of animals, especially food animals, more than any other animal welfare group and 2) The capitalists hate them and have promulgated lies against them.

For example, there was an article in Salon 17 years ago about the owner of Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus spying and manipulating a writer for years to keep her from writing a book about them. They did all kinds of things including hiring ex-CIA . It also mentioned in passing that they did they same thing with PETA which was trying to stop them from mistreating their animals.,

Feld had set up a special unit, much like the Watergate "plumbers," to destroy anyone who threatened the image of the circus as wholesome fun for the whole family, not to mention a conscientious custodian of animals and circus children. It was headed by one Richard Froemming, one of Feld's executive vice presidents, George swore. His main target was People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), and similar groups that had annoyed Feld with charges that the Ringling Bros.' elephants were badly cared for. https://www.salon.com/2001/08/30/circus_2/

It's a long article and that's just the second part so you might not want to read it all. But it opened my eyes to a lot of things. And, secondarily, made me question and generally disbelieve anything negative i read about PETA.
