I got pumped up reading it and forced myself out into the snow for extra labor which wasn't death defying but still kind of satisfied.

Hah! I texted my niece and asked if she wanted to go on an overnight hike. We love camping in bad weather, there's something about it that's very satisfying. I don't think we're ready to climb any mountains, but a hill sounds fun.

u/jet199 - I think it might be a man thing.

Yeah! It's been a pretty decent snow storm here, its up to 10-12 inches plus the massive shoveled piles and I suited up and went running in it, through a field, this little woods, around a trail and I'll load some suitable music and get in the primal energy and its an experience.

Have you seen the film Everest?

No, any good? The article talks about what that movie is based on.

Well sort of.

It's like a horror movie where the monster coming to get them is their own stupidity.

I get the appeal of tough outdoorsy activity but climbing dangerous mountains is just dumb stupid by people who need to feed their egos too much. Then they get killed and worse get others like the sherpas killed.

I guess I read the book Mountains of the Mind by Robert Macfarlane a while back. That's supposed to lay out why people do it but it just made me realise how it's a complete cultural blip which is pointless, like tribal people wearing lip plates.

I feel a strange pull to go climb Everest now. Imagine if we sent four saiditors up there and then y'all could bet on which of us come back alive, if any.

the sherpas killed

The annual fatality rate for a Sherpa is 10x greater than that of a commercial fisherman, and is considerably greater than the fatality rate of a combat soldier.

At least they're not calling me up about extended warranties.

That's certainly not the lesson I took from the article.
