Prepper/self reliance brahs, I summon thee. Maybe you guys will have some useful suggestions for me.

Thanks for the ping.

May I repost/redirect to this in /s/Preppers?

I do watch for a lot of DIY and prepper stuff. Don't know why, but I hadn't considered focusing on "pre-industrial" content which makes a tonne of sense. Also, worth considering: post-apocalyptic (Mad Max-ish) and post-war (MacGyver survivalism) DIY stuff - as well as the post-crises community building with fair politics.

Off topic:
I wish /u/magnora7 would create a new "sub-filter" between "all" or "none" so that some popular subs (ie. DAR and TumblrInAction) wouldn't dominate /s/All yet also could be present and participate.

The Voluntaryist flag is backwards.

Yeah I think studying Amish (and similar communities) technology, techniques etc as well as just stuff people used up to right before the Industrial Revolution is a good idea, along with stuff people are still using today in less developed countries. I just can't seem to find any good resources, I just find a bunch of LARPing about how to build sustainable cities in the desert and shit rather than practical things normal people can either make themselves, or purchase to replace some gadgets they have or whatever.

Just subscribe and use the subscribed communities tab I guess.

Electronical

This is what happens when you go to edit a title but don't delete the word you're changing. Never gonna make it.

Great word.

Great post.

Great food for thought. We may need MUCH more of this.

I used to follow a lot of those kind of lofi minimalist sites 10+ years ago.

I know of a few that might be good, but I don't recall their names, but will now keep an eye open.

Off the top of my head I'd consider looking up Amish, Mennonite, old Quakers, Pennsylvania Dutch (some of my heritage), and similar sects, along with homesteading, 19th century settlers, and survivalists with necessarily very different adaptive experiences depending on their/your region.

I love love love Earthships, but don't know of any that are "pre-industrial primitive". Now that might a novel experiment worth doing, documenting, and building new alt-communities around.

I could list a bunch of YouTubers doing it for themselves, including some of my faves 1 2 3 4 5 And more not on hand , but they're all too modern, renovating homes, tiny homes, living on boats, making furniture, etc., etc., etc,. When Kris Harbour, the first I linked, finishes his hydroelectric system build series I was going to compile and post them together. Not "simple" or decomplexified with a lot of math for max efficiency. Nor cheap.

I'm going to be asking all my local prepping groups for pre-industrial resources.

pre-industrial technology that you can DIY?

Not really except if you're talking about people just building shit out of mud and I'm sure you're familiar with the low tech YouTube scene (i.e. primitive technology). Lots of the low tech channels are scams and not worth your time IMO. Personally I like the more homesteading and salvage oriented stuff. Here are some suggestions in that realm:

This is basically a dead sub at this point but it was excellent when it was on reddit.

This is an outstanding book and worth having in physical form:

One cool old school power source is a gasifier system:

These things use to be everywhere until the Jews bought up the patents and changed the laws

There are lots of great youtubers in this DIY and alt tech space as well:

This guy is also just incredibly motivating when it comes to fixing/repairing/reusing and re-purposing

I'm getting into HAM radio recently as well. This article has two good starter videos.

The back to basics book looks awesome, will prolly buy that. Homesteadonomics looks like something along the lines of what I want too. The others not so much, too much tech.

I recommend ctrl+f'ing Technological Slavery/ISAIF to the section titled 'Two Types of Technology' and read points 207-212 (this will take like 2 minutes, it's a few short paragraphs and well worth it to learn the conception and distinction of small-scale and organization-dependent technologies). I am essentially attempting to learn skills and build things that will be available regardless of what happens. For example with wood and simple metal tools, no electricity etc. Pre-industrial level of complexity and only basic materials that I could easily source myself if for example I was teleported to a desert island, or a SHTF situation etc.

These kinds of simple DIY projects also are meditative for me, whereas working with jigsaws and other power tools isn't. There's practical uses with them and I use them all the time for stuff, but I like the LARP feeling of using the kind of tools ancient, medieval etc people used. Also big agree on the primitive channels, they're somewhat entertaining sometimes but it's just useless entertainment. I'm more interested in tutorial kind of stuff that teaches cheap, effective, low/no tech ways of getting basic day to day shit done as well as slightly loftier stuff like how to build your home suited to your particular climate (this is a subject WrathOfGnon has gone into some detail on for example).

Here's an easier that requires less skill investment:

I'm subscribed to this guy. A Portuguese Canadian who is insanely redpilled, he documents everything he does to survive a societal collapse.

Boy Scout merit badge books probably have a lot of cool stuff. But the US Govt has put out a lot of survival manuals over the years.
