Everyone I know who collects watches does so for investment first and showing off second. There's also a networking element where business/money men will have the same set of boring interests which you have to become fluent in if you want to network with them.

I'm sure some of these guys have a passing nerdy interest in cogs and dials and things but you would never know that from how they talk about it.
