What about in cases of rape or the child being born into poverty? Or how about threat to the mother's life or if the child will be born with crippling mental and physical ailments making their life horrible and parasitic on society?

Rape and deformities are extreme cases. I do not necessarily oppose abortion during early pregnancy in such situations. The problem for me is that Abortion, incl. mid- and late-term, has become generalized and getting rid of a baby on-demand for absolutely ridiculous reasons is considered legitimate.

I don't think poverty serves as a justification for preventing a birth. Poor people can also improve their lives if they work hard enough. Why not give them a chance?

2nd and 3rd term abortions (and loss of pregnancy at all) can fuck up the cervix and make it incompetent for future pregnancies. Unfortunately, there are some extreme cases of deformity and other situations that can occur with the fetus that don't show up until later in pregnancy as well.

Regarding poverty, it's difficult enough for people with a viable education to find decent work. The US doesn't even have maternity leave that's worth a damn in most instances, so you've lost that same level of income for the post partum period. There's also childcare, which is the cost of rent/month in many areas. Government assistance only helps until you meet a certain income threshold, and that's not very high. Then you're left wondering what to do while you have to scrape by. Not all of those women are in coupled relationships, some may have a nonexistent support system and not have a home safety net.

It's easy to assume that these women were the dregs of society, and should have maybe chosen better partners or kept their legs closed. It's easy to say young families should have just pulled up their bootstraps or whatever the hell the saying is to make more money. It's a lot easier to have an opinion and tell people what they should have done than it is to walk in their footsteps and make those mistakes yourself.
