and that globohomo demonized him

WRONG.

That was Ian Smith. Rhodesia was the country that came before Zimbabwe, and they were fighting a three front war against the U.S, China and the Soviets.

When Mugabe came to power, he accepted billions in free gibs from America. He was always controlled opposition.

USAID has provided more than $3.2 billion in development assistance to Zimbabwe since its independence in 1980. Over the past three decades, the USAID Mission in Zimbabwe has focused on strengthening Zimbabwe’s health systems, improving standards of living, supporting democratic processes, and enabling economic growth.
Early USAID contributions to the country’s development included: providing loans for home construction for over 40,000 low-income households, investing over $170 million in factories and farms to increase the productivity of industry and smallholder farmers, supporting community-based natural resource and wildlife management, and funding thousands of Zimbabweans to attend university in the United States.

He was always controlled opposition.

Maybe at first, but by the time the US was literally sanctioning and vilifying his regime it was clear that he was genuine. The US supported Saddam during the Iran-Iraq War, but overall Saddam was still a great nationalist leader.

Even if he was, Mugabe still made the biggest mistake of going to war against Rhodesia. He basically fell for the racism meme, even though there where Black Soldiers who knew Communism was a bigger threat, and they were still under good hands with the White Man.

Now look at the country today? Zimbabwe went from being the breadbasket of Africa, to the basket case.
