The same could have been said about Whites or even Japanese people. Especially when so many popular IP's have ridiculous origins but later became big hits. A movie about talking animals sounds stupid right? Except that's literally how we got Mickey Mouse and a slew of other Disney films. Or how about a video game based on a fat Italian plumber? Except Super Mario is the most recognizable game character out there.

The reason is because Japan is westernized and they share the same social problems created by technology and urbanization that occurs in western societies. I don't think a dilapidated, African society will have much in common with first world Asian and European societies. Western societies also export their culture into westernized Asian countries which in turn inspires Asian creators to create works that are liked by western audiences. The creator's might be doing it to appeal to a larger demographic, the novelty of a foreign culture or be an emergent hit.

I agree, although a film can still be popular without it. Michael Bay still finds work every year, even though his gimmick is "explosions".

When people say Michael Bay is a bad director they are talking about storytelling and thematic depth of his movies. He has good special effects and action scenes in his movies. Can you name a Black director that does special effects and action scenes better than Michael Bay blockbuster hits?

Wouldn't it make more sense for Black Filmmakers to just ask the South African government for money? Assuming this is the same government that already hands out grants to Black businesses, funding for a movie should follow the same principle.

It might be possible but do they have the operational knowledge and talent base or demand to make these type of movies? Western movies for example have better live action special effects than Asian live action films. Is this because of lack of IQ? Not necessarily because CG and cartoons are often contracted out to South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. They have the operational knowledge to have good special effects in live action films but they probably take short cuts because of budget constraints or there isn't a huge demand for it. Geniuses also need a stable society and the infrastructure to make technical masterpieces. How are you going to make a good movie if you have more immediate problems like the gang in the next town or making enough money for basic sustenance? The average of a society plays a huge part in its overall success.

I don't deny Japan has borrowed from Western influences. But the opposite is also true. Samurai's and Ninjas are native to Japanese culture, and yet Western Artists have borrowed those foreign ideas for their own works (i.e Mortal Kombat or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) . Ancient Japan as well is also a popular setting that still enjoys global success.

If [sub-saharan] Africans were really desperate for ideas, they would just look towards their culture and make the same movies or games about their neighbor.

His special effects are also criticized. That doesn't mean it has no talent. It's true creating those blockbuster effects are time consuming and expensive. But at the same time, people see it as lazy film making because it comes off as obnoxious or a distraction.

My point was a Black director doesn't have to copy the Michael Bay stuff to still make a good movie. There are plenty of low budget or Indie movies who put more effort into actual screenplay and writing, and the reception has just been as good or positive.

A perfect example of this was the Star Wars parody "Hardware Wars". Even on a shoestring budget of $8,000, George Lucas admitted it was actually his favourite movie that referenced one of his own.

The answer is "Yes". South Africa has schools, that each the same programs on movie making like anywhere else in the world.

But here's where South Africa is stupid. Anybody who graduates from these classes and are serious about joining the film industry, will rather immigrate to another country instead. This is called brain drain, and it leads to the vicious cycle where any native talent who could of made a great South African feature, is immediately poached by another country instead.

In regards to the rest of Asia, I would argue that they are already catching up to the West, instead of just being a place to outsource effects. For example, this may surprise you but the highest grossing films of 2021 were not Western made. It's actually Chinese movies who have been breaking box office records. Now whether or not these Asian films actually do better globally is yet to be seen, but we know the potential exists, and they continue to invest more money into this industry.

Yes, but there are many more pieces of Japanese created entertainment that is more popular in the West because it has a European aesthetic or is explicitly pandering to a western audience.

I don't think ancient Egyptians are anything like Sub-Saharan Africans. There is a big difference between cultural inspiration and roleplaying as another race. Europeans are part of a shared history that have enough common with one another that the history of opposing European groups is a necessary part of understanding the question of their own ethnic group's "who we are" and "how did we get here."

The brain drain is caused from lucrative opportunities abroad and lack of native infrastructure and organization. There are probably enough talent Blacks to make a decent movie, but do they have the ability to bring those people together to work on a project towards a common goal? You might have a director, but do you have all the other fields necessary to make a good movie like camera men, editors, marketers, technicians, actors, writers, etc. Bringing a bunch of different specialized occupations together to create a large scaled industry is difficult. There is also a possibility that African societies don't scale very well outside of small towns and villages. Even if they have skyscrapers and tall buildings the vast majority are just not interested in the same things as Asians and Europeans.

The Jewish problem plays a part because in areas where Blacks are coddled by Whites they have no interest in trying to compete with other races through culture. There identity only exists based on What Jews put into their minds and stupid victim narratives made up by their ancestors. They have no positive identity of themselves other than "When Whitey hurt us" and "When Whitey freed us from slavery". There is no culture beyond that for most Blacks beyond superficial status signaling.

Dude, you're underselling Japanese culture if you don't think there's a global interest in people exclusively looking for content that has a Japanese feel to it. If you play video games, you should be aware there's an entire genre called "JRPG" which literally implies Role Playing Games that are made with Japan's taste in mind.

Even the popularity of anime is specifically because Japan took cartoons that were similar to Disney in the beginning, but handcrafted it with a different approach to storytelling and style.

How many Human beings do you know that are talking animals? Do you think Mickey Mouse was a real person? In the world of entertainment, there's a choice between realism and stuff that is completely fantasy. Nobody has to be an actual Ancient Egyptian to make movies about them or use their ideas, and I only used that example because it's literally the biggest setpiece that exists on their continent.

It's not unheard of completely different cultures to borrow from somebody else and still be popular. I mentioned Star Wars before, but the actual main characters (Jedi) are again, based on Japanese Samurai. The reference may have flew over most people's heads because they're interested in the lightsaber fights and robots, but it still doesn't change that George Lucas only created them because he was inspired by another culture first.

So why do Indie movies exist? I just posted that George Lucas favorite parody was made by a couple of guys with only $8,000. Not every movie project will have multi-million budgets but that's not an excuse to not make them ever. South Africa's problems are not about lack of resources. They even made a movie before and it still did ok (i.e District 9). But brain drain hurts them from potentially making more like this, because all the talented people keep leaving as opposed to staying behind and helping to develop the local industry.

You're thinking too much about Black experiences living in the West. Especially since those things DON'T apply to native Africans who never even got on the boats and left.
