Glen Cook's Black Company novels are as good as fantasy gets. His character work and plotting are stellar and unlike any other fantasy writer.I'm also really enjoying his Instrumentalities Of The Night series. This is from a guy that hates fantasy.

If you haven't read Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson then you have a treat in store.

If you're looking for some hard SF and a great story then check out Dragon's Egg by Robert Forward. The sequel is not very good, unfortunately.

Gene Wolfe's Book Of The New Sun series is a fantastic read. He's a grossly under valued writer IMO.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke is a refreshing take on magical realism. The TV adaption does a surprisingly good job of capturing the book.
