I've said this before, but I'll be surprised if separation can ever work in a nation that controls nuclear weapons. We have the USSR as an example of how this can go horribly wrong.

You have an inflated idea of "horribly". But even ignoring that, you can surely see that whatever you think about the result, the breakup of the USSR was forced by economics. The breakup of the US could be forced by some other factor.

Now today, Russia invades and constantly annexes territory from it.

First, if the USSR had not broken up, Ukraine would be completely "annexed" by Russia instead. Obviously the present situation is better for Ukraine. Second, it is a mistake to blame this solely to Ukraine's lack of nuclear weapons. There are many non-nuclear neighboring countries that Russia does not bother, and there are non-expansionist nuclear powers (Pakistan).

When Texas tries to build a wall to cut the flow of illegal immigrants, California will bomb the shit out of Texas

No. If the illegal immigrants are going to California directly, and there's little reason why they wouldn't, there's no need for California to care about what Texas does or does not do.
