I think this is pretty much the norm for the Olympics already. It's not some departure. Competitors usually wear the colours and uniforms of their national team. I don't follow it incredibly closely but I've never seen open political messaging on an Olympic athlete's apparel before.

The IOC even reacted negatively to the famous 'Black Power' salute in 1968. The Olympics are supposed to be apolitical.

Yeah, but also look at the political climate we are in where BLM has forced itself into every bit of advertising. The Olympics is going be the biggest event this summer, and no BLM presence is a major blow to that.

The Olympics have always been apolitical. This isn't a departure and it isn't 'based' it's just par for the course.
