How vulnerable is the world? Sooner or later a technology capable of wiping out human civilisation might be invented. How far would we go to stop it?

I've often wondered about that, even if "we" didn't, how do we know there weren't intelligent dinosaurs etc. that did. The one thing that makes me think it didn't happen is humans have terraformed earth so that almost no part of it doesn't have human artifacts. The way we know about dinosaurs is sediment layers, not that their bones are so durable, i.e. we'd see some technological artifacts in their sediment layers.
