The tired tropes of the liberal objection to this are not worth commenting on, but I find it genuinely surprising that the Chinese leadership think the best way to strengthen the masculinity of their youth is sportsball, lol.

Why? If I were dictator sports would be mandatory as well as regular fitness and the promotion of the athletic ideal. Nothing better for young men than to play especially team sports. It's pro-social and probably one of the most beneficial things a boy can learn.

Of course I don't want them sitting drinking beers on a Sunday in their man-cave hoping their harridan of a wife doesn't get mad if they get a little too rowdy when their favourite criminal tackles an opposition recidivist felon but playing sports is a great thing for boys -- and girls too up to a point.

Have you ever played football? I fail to see how it does anything at all for masculinity. Fitness and athleticism obviously develop the individual, but I fail to see how something like football does the same thing or how it serves a "pro-social" purpose. To be more specific, I am referring to soccer here, which is what the article is also referring to. I know very little about American football.

I played it so much that I was lucky enough to represent my country at youth level and, among other things, tour Europe. One of the best things I ever did and playing sport taught me many valuable life lessons including self-discipline and dealing with adversity. Of course as well it taught me team work.

Have you ever played?

Yes. That's why I asked if you had. It seems we've had a very different experience.

Shame. Although my opinion on the benefits of sports for young people isn't just based solely on my personal experience.
