Haven't people always been able to vote by mail anyways?

I thought the drama is that the Democrats want the election to be only vote by mail.

Yes, but in some states one has to fill out an absentee ballot request form that is sent in the mail months in advance. Democrats want to remove that entire process in all states and have the absentee ballot send to everyone by mail automatically. This is a big game changer because high time preference and otherwise uninterested voters will probably participate in the election.

Didn't know that, thanks.

The drama is that the president and his henchman DeJoy are openly sabotaging people's ability to vote by mail at all. Don't let the alt right tell you what other people think, they're lying.

The problem is that dems are aggressively giving ballots to every household, sometimes prefilled. The easier it is for people to vote the less edge republicans have. If it's as simple as signing a form from a pollworker then it's an easy win for dems. Republicans are outnumbered but have more passionate supporters so their edge is making it more difficult to vote.
