The internet has a tremendous direct and indirect impact on elections. Especially with the coronavirus lockdowns, more and more people consume their news online. Those articles that they read are written by journalists who spend most of their time on twitter. Their opinions are determined by the available opinions as filtered through twitter's censorship algorithm.

Could they swing an election?

They have far more power than that. They don't need elections, though they can swing them anyway. They have the power to manipulate minds at such a scale that even the opposition will be batting for their ideas.
