Probably a coincidence. Not completely sure, but that emblem on his hat is probably the logo for The Gurning Chimps, a band that the guy was a member of.

"The New Zealand Shooter" was sporting all kinds of memes. He was playing meme music and even spoke in memes: "Subscribe to PewDiePie." So the patch would fit right in with his overall design. Also GTA is the kind of game spooks would play.

He was playing meme music? Lmao I feel like an idiot for thinking he had the radio ON. I feel kinda guilty about it but when I heard the song 'gas gas gas' I thought 'what a cool song' took me a long time to find it. Didn't know about eurobeat back then

Anyway, I think that emblem is too obscure and ill-defined for anyone to get it. When someone references memes they just want someone to get the meme. But it's basically impossible for anyone to get this one. So it was probably something different. Lots of things have circular symbols and logos - Yamaha, /pol/ seal, are two things off the top of my head

He was playing music the whole time and had it all lined up on tape. He played Fire by Arthur Brown . My favorite was the Serbian Fight Song used on the 4chan Weapons Board, that was later taken down by ScrewTube. There was nothing random about the music, in fact he may have used the music to time his actions so he could stop at exactly the right time to fire a shotgun three times at his windshield from the inside of his car, with no apparent damage to the windshield. Why? Can you imagine the sound if he was using real shells in that gun? It was staged.
