R.D. Laing, Scottish psychiatrist (1927-1989) expressed very similar ideas. "They [future humans] will see that what we call “schizophrenia” was one of the forms in which, often through quite ordinary people, the light began to break through the cracks in our all-too-closed minds." In a shorter quote, I cannot find now, he said, and I paraphrase: What we call mental illness may be simply a natural response to life at this time. Laing may have found this idea in reading U. G. Krishnamurti (1918–2007) or come up with it independently. For some time (1956-1964), Laing worked at the Tavistock Institute.
