I don't watch local TV news so I hadn't noticed. Seems they make a big clamor every time prices go up. I think part of it is to gear up the populace do wars that would decrease the price of oil. Also I think it's just a super-visible metric of inflation that people like to keep track of.

It is definitely suspicious how the local news stations almost always report the same thing, regardless of what locality you're in... They're obviously getting their feeds from some central source, likely AP or Reuters, from what I understand. Interestingly, Reuters is a Canadian-owned company.
