Disinformation. These objects were being tracked. They always are. If the military deems them to be a non-threat, they will let them pass so as not to alert China as to our tracking/intercept capabilities and reaction time. The only reason they are shooting them down now is because they have to put on appearances now that it is mainstream news.

A weather balloon is not like a party balloon. It doesn't poop when you shoot it.

This has happened before in Canada over Newfoundland (like back in 2014 I think) when an F-18 unloaded with it's guns into one of these balloons and it still stayed a float.
