Leuchter claimed that the rooms in which the supposed killings took place could not have been used as gas chambers. Despite attacks from the Jewish community, many authorities have supported his claims. To quote him:

I haven't read the article yet, but pretty much any room that has four walls and a roof can be a gas chamber.

People die at home because the operate a generator too close to a window.

Executive summary: Leuchter's "report" was so badly done that either he was dishonest or incompetent or both. The best we can say about him and his report is that he some chump who doesn't know shit from clay. The worst is that he is deliberately dishonest.

Leuchter was certainly a fraud. He claimed to be an engineer despite having no qualifications or training as one (his only qualification was a Bachelor of Arts from Boston University) and signed a consent decree acknowledging that he was not an engineer despite having represented himself as one. US Federal courts found that he was an unreliable witness when testifying about execution equipment.

His moral character is suspect. He attempted to shake down prisons for contracts by threatening to testify for the defense if the prison did not give him a contract to supply execution equipment. He misrepresented his execution equipment as "painless" when it was in fact excruciatingly agonizing (potassium chloride injection), the prisoners merely paralyzed and unable to scream.

But more importantly, his "report" about Auschwitz is total bullshit, failing even the simplest credibility checks:

  • He didn't test the walls of Auschwitz for cyanide residue until more than 40 years after the war was over.
  • He ignored tests performed immediately after the war, which found high concentration of cyanide.
  • He included reconstructed buildings in his sampling, either out of ignorance or deliberate deceit. In other words, buildings which had been rebuilt and had never been exposed to Zyklon B.
  • Instead of taking scrapings from the surface of exposed bricks, he bashed large chips off, severely diluting any cyanide residue.
  • He was ignorant about how much cyanide it takes to kill insects compared to humans, wrongly assuming that only trace amounts of cyanide are needed for delousing, when in reality it requires far more cyanide to kill lice than to kill people.
  • By his own admission, he knew nothing about how crematoria operate: he estimated that the Auschwitz crematoria could only handle 156 people a day when the Waffen-SS Commandant in charge of construction reported that it could handle more than 4700 people a day.
