I think groups like the NASA and such heavily manipulated our knowledge of history in order to trick us about the nature of the earth. Maracaibo's Catatumbo lightning is still a mystery to a lot of scientists.

The Catatumbo lightning is an atmospheric phenomenon that happens over the Lake of Maracaibo in Venezuela in which an endless amount of lightning hits the lake. A lot of scientists still think about theories about why it happens...

My Bittersweet Seeds screenplay/storyboard/graphic novel's second half of the second act passes through this remarkable region and takes place in Venezuela before blasting into space for the final 3rd act. I researched that and other regional things to incorporate them into my story in fascinating and dramatic ways. It's not the only location in my story that is utilized for full effect.

I don't think it's as much of a mystery as a perfect natural stage for that phenomenon. There are other nifty thing in the area too, and they all seem far too perfect for my epic story - yet they exist. One of these years I really need to finish it.

Not related to the plot, one science-fiction element I've considered including in the story, is an array of lightning-resistant kites and Earth-tethered blimps near the mouth of the lake that would both harness the lightning somehow as well as harvest rare ozone from the electrified air. This "harvest" would also be on the 20km tall tower - a whole other complex matter that is at the heart of the near-future cautionary tale.
